Many Americans suffer from hormonal imbalances.  The word hormone comes from the root words that means “to set in motion” which is so fitting since hormonal imbalances can “stop us in our tracks”.  The primary hormones that we focus on at Heart & Soul are THYROID, INSULIN, CORTISOL, ESTROGEN, PROGESTERONE, and TESTOSTERONE.  Other hormones are also checked and considered when evaluating our guests for hormonal imbalances which can result in a long list of problems:  weight gain, loss of energy, loss of muscle mass, loss of libido, digestive issues, hair changes, hair loss, depression, poor sleep, and the list goes on.  We often look to address these issues early in the course of evaluation and treatment because these can have a big impact on quality of life.  Many can have hormonal balance just by making a few nutritionally supportive changes and by decreasing the body’s inflammatory burden, which interferes with the function of normal hormones.  Others need supplementation and monitoring, but we have many happy clients who feel “back to themselves” after having a carefully tailored balancing of the hormones.  We offer individualized hormonal balancing including, when appropriate, bioidentical hormone pellets, topical and oral preparations, and injectables.  This is an important part of the healing journey.

In 1990, Dr. Amy Offutt graduated magna cum laude from Abilene Christian University with a B.S. in Biology.  Upon finishing college, she married Brad Offutt, her high school sweetheart.  After living in Austin and working for a pharmaceutical research company, Dr. Offutt relocated to San Antonio in 1993 and began medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Upon graduating in 1997, she began her internship at San Antonio’s Christus Santa Rosa Hospital and completed her residency in Family Medicine in 2000.  Looking to practice a full range of Family Medicine, she and Brad moved to Horseshoe Bay, Texas, and she then began working with the Hoerster Clinic System and Llano Memorial Hospital as a staff physician.  During her seven years at Hoerster Clinic, Dr. Offutt was involved in full scale Family Medicine, including obstetrics, inpatient hospital and outpatient medical care.

In 2005, after developing an interest in aesthetic medical procedures, Dr. Offutt opened Bella Medical Spa & Laser Center in Marble Falls, Texas. This practice grew rapidly and successfully and in 2007 relocated to the Historic Roper Building. It followed as a natural transition to move Dr. Offutt’s medical practice to this location as well.

During this time frame, Dr. Offutt began to notice that her patients of several years were gaining weight and taking more and more medications. Several were not getting healthier, but rather more tired and trying to find ways to feel better.  There was no prescription pill to satisfy this request. So Dr. Offutt decided to go back to school.  She pursued a fellowship in Functional Medicine, medicine focusing on underlying physiology. This was a refreshing pursuit in that new strategies for caring for patients were learned. The emphasis refocused on health rather than sickness.  Dr. Offutt and her staff are now dedicated to individually helping each patient optimize his/her health, even from the depths of sickness. The fellowship provided many new tools to use in this endeavor.  Dr. Offutt completed an advanced fellowship in Functional Medicine in 2011 and passed the board certification.  She is a self-proclaimed lifelong learner and remains enrolled in post-graduate courses on a regular basis to continue to learn about new tools to help her patients.

When the doors opened in 2007, the medical spa aspect of care was growing and the business retained the name Bella Medical Spa.  However, it became apparent over time that this name did not encompass well the goals and offerings of the practice.  Therefore, in 2013, the practice was renamed Wellness Works.  This name reflected our desire to promote wellness and healing.  As the practice transformed, so did our patients with several noting improved health and energy with a decrease in drug burden and inflammatory conditions.  In 2016, Dr. Offutt and her husband, Brad, were able to achieve a long-time dream of incorporating a yoga studio into the space of the office.  Brad is an advanced Baptiste Power Yoga instructor and avid yoga practitioner, mentor, and life coach.  Because the name Wellness Works did not fully encompass these added aspects of the practice, the name was once again changed, this time for the long haul to Heart & Soul Integrative Health & Yoga.  This name reflects the passion that both Dr. Offutt and her husband, Brad, have for helping our community of patients, clients, and families acquire vitality, connection, and living life to its fullest potential.

Dr. Offutt and her husband, Brad, have 3 wonderful children, Colby (born in 2001), Dylan (born in 2003), and Halley (born in 2008). They live in Marble Falls and attend Lakeshores Church.

Lumenis Ultra Pulse Fractional CO2 Laser

As today’s baby boomer age, greater numbers of patients are seeking ways to repair sun damaged skin and to minimize the ravages of time that cause skin to appear older. Our Lumenis CO2 fractional laser uses intense light pulses to treat fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and to lighten redness and hyperpigmentation. This treatment also stimulates the production ofcollagen to give your skin better elasticity and a more youthful appearance. With proper sun protection, results of laser skin resurfacing can last for more than five years. Fractional treatments take the typical CO2 laser and lowers the power density and spreads out the beam so some of the skin is not treated and will heal faster.

Are You A Good Candidate For CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

If you have fine lines or wrinkles around your eyes or mouth or on your forehead, shallow scars, or uneven skin tone then you may be a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing. However, if you are prone to acne outbreaks or if you have a very dark complexion, then you may not be a good candidate.

What You Need To Know

Fractional CO2 laser procedures typically involve one week of downtime because of peeling, redness and swelling. Patients can return to work in 5-7 days and will look as if they have bad sunburn. Our patients are prescribed Valium before the procedure to help them relax and Valtrex to help prevent fever blisters and are also required to have a driver transport them home. A post procedure kit is available for you to cleanse, moisturize, heal and protect the area treated by laser. Before your treatment, pre and post procedure instructions will be given and all questions answered.

Laser Hair Reduction

Laser hair removal is a safe alternative to remove unwanted facial or body hair while eliminating razor burn and the “shadow” effect caused by shaving. Laser hair removal can be performed on all parts of the body including the cheeks, lip, legs, arms, underarms, and back, as well as sensitive areas like the bikini line, ears, nose and chest.

At Heart and Soul we utilize the Lumines LightSheer® laser hair reduction system, a gold standard in the industry. This system is indicated for the permanent reduction of unwanted hair (in all skin types – Fitzpatrick I-VI) and for the treatment of superficial veins (spider veins), pseudo folliculitis bar bae (razor bumps) and benign pigmented lesions (black or brown spots).

Botox and dermal fillers are two primary treatments used to enhance your appearance. Botox relaxes muscles and reduces wrinkle etching over time. Dermal fillers fill lines and stimulate collagen growth to diminish or eliminate wrinkles, folds or lines in the skin. Our providers have years of expertise in dermal fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic by Allergan and can help guide you in which treatment would be best for you!

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves Botox for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe lateral canthal lines (crow’s feet) and also for the temporary improvement of glabellar lines (frown lines between eyebrows). It works by keeping the muscles from tightening so wrinkles are less prominent. Our providers will assess your facial anatomy to determine which areas might benefit from botox without giving you a frozen unnatural appearance.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers typically fall into two categories: hyaluronic acid or synthetic fillers. Well known and popular hyaluronic acid fillers are marketed under these names: Juvederm Ultra XC, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, Restylane-L, Perlane-L and Belotero Balance. All being dermal fillers with the active ingredient hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar in the human body where it cushions and lubricates the joints and naturally provides fullness to the skin. These fillers work by binding with the water in the tissues to gently expand and add immediate fullness to areas of volume loss that have resulted in creases and folds on the face.

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be used in all areas of the face including around the eyes and in the lips. The results from these fillers are fairly instantaneous and can last anywhere from 6-12 months or longer and are made without any animal proteins and therefore do not require any skin testing prior to treatment. Many of these products are pre-mixed with a local anesthetic making the procedure virtually pain-free. There are subtle differences in each hyaluronic acid filler and we can help determine which product best fits your needs.

Well known synthetic fillers are marketed under names like Radiesse, Sculptra and Artefill. These dermal fillers contain substances not found in the human body and cause the body to encapsulate micro particles with collagen in your skin to provide longer lasting results, sometimes up to several years.

Radiesse uses calcium hydroxyapatite suspended in a water-based gel to provide immediate results lasting a year or longer. Radiesse can be used in most areas of the face and also in the backs of hands to provide a more youthful appearance. Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid particles suspended in a sterile water solution and is frequently used for significant volume loss in the face. It lasts 2-3 years and works by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production to increase facial volume. Artefill contains polymethylmethacralate micro particles suspended in a bovine/cow collagen. It is the first and only FDA approved microsphere enhanced collagen filler indicated for the nasolabial folds and is considered to be permanent filler.

As we mature, our skin will also begin to age and show signs of sun damage. Microdermabrasion is a pain free, fast and effective solution to restoring a youthful appearance to your skin. By removing dead skin cells, it exposes the healthy skin layers beneath giving your skin a soft feel and vibrant glow and also smooths away fine lines and uneven skin tone. Microdermabrasion is also used to blend away sun damage spots and opens pores to help remove clogs that lead to acne. In addition, it will also work to stimulate collagen production which results in firmer plumper skin. This is a non-invasive procedure with no down time and can be done as often as once a week. The only side effect may be a slight redness, similar to a mild sunburn, which fades in a few hours.

This seems like the buzz that fills the exam room over the past several months.  Rightly so!  The micro biome (the bacteria that God created to live within our digestive tracts, on our skin, in our mouths, and those sensitive private areas) is of great importance as it plays a significant role in our health and healing.  We take a unique approach for each person – working to rebalancing the body’s natural state of living with these microbes.  After all, there are 100 trillion cells of bacteria in our digestive tracts that are directing the show!  If these are not diversified enough, are of imbalanced species and types, are being constantly challenged by toxicities and medications, or just stubbornly “off”, the results initially can be bloating and / or indigestion, but many suffer with chronic constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and heartburn.  Ultimately, over time, these imbalances can result in autoimmunity, severe fatiguing illnesses, mental illness diagnoses (gut-brain connection), and  a weak immune system.  This aspect of healing cannot be overemphasized as we coach you to better health.
